Julie Garfield is in fact the daughter of John. Vince and I were at a dinner with her once. She referred to Marine Le Pen as "that Nazi c___." It was beautiful.

Like father, like daughter - in BOTH cases. I wasn't entirely sure it was her, even when I caught the name in the credits. I mean, I know she has a career in her own right, but it was still a nice touch to have John Garfield's daughter making a cameo.

I mentioned HUAC recently to a group of acquaintances.

None of them recognized the reference. They also didn't seem to know about the Black List. I was shocked.

What are kids being taught in history these days? I shudder to think.

I was never taught anything about - or even heard of - the Blacklist in school until reading Victor Navasky's Naming Names in 1983 or 84 (I started reading The Nation and The Village Voice in college).

And now I've been shamed - never read Navasky. My intro was probably Guilty by Suspicion because De Niro was in it (or maybe bits of Chaplin?), so I suppose it did its job. I'll admit, I'm still pretty vague on some of it. I can only hope that THE GREAT CRIME WRITER RENEE PATRICK finally gets round to covering it in an Edith Head book.

I have a horrible feeling most people think the Black List is that screenwriting thing - and I'll take the Fifth instead of commenting on that. If Jeopardy! is to be believed (this is my only barometer, folks), kids are mostly being taught presidents and Civil War stuff. I don't know if it goes much beyond the beginning of the 20th century. Which is a shame, because if they were taught about the blacklist, then they'd get to find out Reagan was a massive snitch.

I think I knew about the blacklist from my parents and my Mom's parents, who were all mighty liberal for their time.

Then, I took film studies in college. And learned even more about it.

The professor recommended Navasky's book and I read that, an age or two ago. :)

And, oh, yeah. That Black List! lol

I remember watching this and finding Allen particularly flat. I'm more of a Mostel fan. And yes, the film tiptoes; it had to. Even modern films that reference the Blacklist are very careful to make their characters apolitical or even falsely accused (Jim Carrey's character is only at a party meeting because he wants to get laid, in The Majestic.) But I suppose that's all that can get made.

It’s kind of daft too - as far as I know, there were very few hardcore communists affected by the blacklist. And most of those were more like the guys in Hail Caesar!
